Most importantly, inside the case is a full reproduction of the iconic Bugatti W16 engine, powered by the same movement. When the automation is activated, the "engine" kicks in, its 16 pistons pumping and its two turbochargers spinning.

Case and Crystal A case made entirely of sapphire crystal is one of the highest achievements in fine watchmaking. The Bugatti Chiron's blue sapphire crystal is the result of months of computer-aided design and manufacturing, as well as traditional hand polishing. This is a challenging multifaceted effort that will take several months to complete.

For example, the tonneau-shaped Chiron case is not a single look, but a mix of geometric surfaces. Then there is the hardness of sapphire. It has a Mohs hardness of 9. Few materials are harder than it, including grade 10 diamonds. Therefore, diamond cutting and polishing tools are used to create the case. Adding color to sapphire crystal complicates the manufacturing process. Sapphire crystals are originally powdered. The color is created by combining a proprietary blend of rare earth elements (a group of 17 metallic elements that are difficult to mine and process), raw ores and metals into the powder, a process called "doping." To achieve the proper dark rich color, more of these minerals, elements and metals are added.

The powder is then heated at extreme temperatures and grows into a very large round sapphire raw material, about the size and shape of a coffee can. This may take 3 to 15 days. Adding color changes the chemical composition of the sapphire and increases the likelihood of inclusions in the workpiece, which would render it unusable. Then they will have to start all over again.

A slice is cut from this large block of colored sapphire that will become the shell of the Bugatti Chiron. This piece is machined and hand polished. Since the color affects the chemical compensation of the sapphire, it must be machined and hand-polished in a slower and more delicate manner.
